Thanksgiving Special: Top Apps for Getting Through It

We all know that Thanksgiving, while being a wonderful time of the year to gather friends and family, can sometimes be a pain in the, ahem, giblets.

Now, we’re not a bunch of Martha Stewarts around here with a never-fail recipe for home-made apple tarts and Top Ten Ways To Use Your Glue Gun, but we do have the one thing that’s always in short supply around the holidays: time. And we use ours to scour the net for the best apps to use for all of your holiday needs, so we can give back something important to you: Your time.

The Family

In order to have the perfect Thanksgiving dinner, you must first have the people to fill the table. And to have those people, you may need to pick them up from the airport.Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year for travelling, so you can expect some delays to be imminent. And if you don’t enjoy waiting around a crowded airport for longer than necessary, we recommend downloading the FlightAware app, available on iOS and Android.

FlightWare App
FlightWare Flight-tracker App

This is an extremely useful free app that allows you to search by either airport or flight number in order to find out more about the conditions of a specific flight. You can then scroll through all the arrivals to find the flight you’re looking for, or filter by the flight number, destination, airline, etc. It will even tell you the gate they’re arriving at, so you can walk confidently into that airport without any need for further delay.

It’s never been easier to pick up your loved ones, and now you have time to prepare for the next feat: Making the perfect turkey.

The Food

If you took on the role of making the dinner this year, or if you want to find a new recipe to wow your dinner guests with this year, then we have the perfect app for you: Sidechef, available for free on Android and iOS.

Sidechef is an interactive app that allows you to follow their recipes in real time, with narrated instructions (yes, you heard that correctly, it actually talks to you!)

First step is to find a recipe, and email yourself the ingredients, so you have a list ready at the grocery store.

Once you are ready, you can tap on Start Cooking, and, well..start cooking! The app allows you to follow hands-free with guided voice instructions, and even integrates a timer, so it can follow you in real-time.

And you thought that cooking was going to be a stressful event this year.

The Drinks

It’s Thanksgiving dinner, there’s a feast on the table, and a weekend ahead of you. What better way to commemorate it than with a nice bottle of wine?

Of course, not all of us are that well versed in the world of wines, and maybe one bottle of Bordeaux doesn’t seem all that different from another bottle of Merlot. That’s where Delectable comes in.

Available for free on Android and iOS, this app allows you to take pictures of wine bottles as you are shopping, and it will respond with ratings and descriptions of the wine, to better help you decide whether your pick of the label with the word “Skinny” is actually worthwhile.

Coordinating It All

And of course, all of this would not be possible without some good old-fashioned communication.Whether you need to inform everyone that you’ve finally landed, or text your husband to remind him to pick up the wine, the success of your Thanksgiving dinner relies on your ability to stay in touch. And what better way to do it than with TextNow?

You can start a group message (for free!), send pictures and custom GIFs (again, for free!), and share in all the laughs during this holiday season, even if they’re directed at you.
